IN RESIDENCY : T.M. PROJECT COMPANY

The Company T.M. PROJECT, created in 2008 by choreographer Thierry Micouin, will be in residency at Flux Laboratory from July 23rd to 28th to work on his new creation “EIGHTEEN”.

T.M. PROJECT develops choreographic pieces in which the notion of installation plays a central role. Videos, projections and soundscapes all come nourish and refine Thierry Micouin’s work as a dancer and a choreographer.

For “EIGHTEEN”, Thierry Micouin will share the stage with his daughter Ilana.

“EIGHTEEN” addresses father-daughter relationships; the piece re-visits part of contemporary dance’s history through some of Thierry Micouin’s artistic experiences, which his daughter Ilana took part in as well.

In 2016, Thierry Micouin created his first project W.H.O. about childhood and teenage years, approaching those times of troubled identity through travesty. Ilana played different roles in the piece: a young girl, a young boy, with or without a wig. Following the piece’s first public representation, the choreographer received a virulent letter, which started with those words: “I do not know whether Ilana is your daughter, but I am very worried. You are a pervert, a pedophile, a criminal.” The letter remained unanswered.

Ilana was 8 years old at that time. Now that she is 18, and following an artistic path herself, Thierry Micouin felt like going back through all those years by questioning her memories, having been both an interpet in her father’s movies and a spectator of his shows.

How did the choregraph’s professional experiences impact his daughter’s choregraphic culture, her bodily corporal memory?

An antidote for the passing of time, neither nostalgic, nor sombre, the piece will answer, quite some years later, this particular letter.
